Improving Patient Safety for Those with Rare Conditions Goal of Latest Medical Journal Articles from Fairfax Plastic Surgeon

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: 17 Nov 2025

FAIRFAX—Continuing his work on anesthesia care for patients with rare conditions and Freeman-Burian syndrome (FBS), DC area plastic surgeon, Dr Craig R Dufresne announced the latest in a series of anesthesia care recommendations in Anästhesiologie & Intensivmedizin, “Anaesthesia Recommendations for Sheldon-Hall syndrome,” published in collaboration with OrphanAnesthesia, a joint project of the Scientific Working Group of Paediatric Anaesthesia of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI e.V.), Orphanet, and the European Society of Paediatric Anaesthesia (ESPA).

Last year, Dufresne’s anesthesia care recommendations on distal arthrogryposis type 1 appeared in Anästhesiologie & Intensivmedizin. All OrphanAnesthesia Anesthesia Recommendations are freely available on their website as living documents, with the static journal version freely available on Anästhesiologie & Intensivmedizin’s website.

Following the 2021 Freeman-Burian syndrome clinical practice guideline webinar, Dufresne was graciously offered the opportunity to write an invited editorial briefly summarizing the condition. “Freeman-Burian Syndrome” was published in the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery.

A world-renowned DC area rare disease specialist and cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon, Dufresne has long sought to improve patient surgical and anesthesia safety, as well as develop creative strategies to manage complex surgical situations presented by these rare conditions. He hopes wider dissemination will improve patient safety by educating anesthesia providers, surgeons, nurses, others involved in the anesthesia and surgical care of patients with these conditions and is proud to support OrphanAnesthesia’s mission.
